George Frederic Handel's beloved Oratorio Messiah will be presented Saturday December 17, 2005 at 7:30pm at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 3rd and Knoblock, Stillwater. Part 1 of this great work, the prophecy and coming of the Messiah, is being performed by Stillwater Chamber Singers and the Stillwater Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Mark Lawlor and John Smedstad. Tickets are $10.00 and are available by calling 405-744-6092. This performance in part is being supported by the Oklahoma Arts Council.

In the words of Dr. Charles Burney, 18th Century music historian, Messiah "has fed the hungry and clothed the naked, fostered the orphan, and enriched succeeding managers of Oratories more than any single musical production in this or any other country." For more than 250 years this work has moved people to tears, and profound shouts of joy. To this day, our concert halls and churches are packed with audience members who feel the Holidays are not complete without listening to this immortal work.

As Henley Denmead stated: "what Handel achieved in Messiah was a wonderful blend of elegant, Italianate melody, alternating with virtuosic vocalism for the soloists and for the chorus, unmatched choral sonorities ranging from madrigalesque lightness to the composer's characteristic ceremonial style which endeared him to the public."

You won't want to miss such stirring choruses as the Hallelujah Chorus, For unto us a child is born, and the opening chorus And the Glory of the Lord. Dr. Kim Childs will open the work with the Tenor Recitative Comfort ye my people, followed by the aria Every Valley shall be exalted. Other soloists include Deanne Fort, Mickey Gregg, Valerie Kisling, Christopher Jackson, Matt Thomas, Rebecca Perry, Lynette Erwin, and Angie Larison.
